The Issue of Student Credit Card
Debt
One of the biggest problems for students who have gone on to
get a higher education is debt. Student credit card debt
on top of leaving university owing enormous amounts of money in
tuition fees can be more than many young people can handle. So
often the question these graduates are asking is what can they
do about all this debt when they have barely begun to earn an
income?
Student credit card debt is a serious problem. Most people
do not think of students using credit cards but recent studies
have shown that seventy eight percent of university students
have a credit card. By the time they graduate ninety five
percent are using credit cards. Thirty two percent have as many
as four, while most have at least three. It doesn’t matter if
these are gas cards, or department store cards or cards that
can be used everywhere like Visa, MasterCard or American
Express. Any card can be a debt trap.
Research is telling us that student credit card debt is an
ever growing problem. For those who are unable to find a job or
who cannot devote enough time to a part time job because of the
intensity of their studies the credit card is an easy answer.
University students on average owe nearly two thousand seven
dollars on their credit cards. Twenty five percent of them owe
over three thousand dollars while as many as ten percent are in
debt for over seven thousand dollars. Most students have no
idea what to do to correct this. The first thing that must be
done to ease this massive student credit card debt issue is to
teach students to use cash to pay for what they need. If they
do not have the cash then whatever it is they don’t need it.
Unfortunately if this is expensive school books or supplies the
credit card may be the only answer for some.
After they graduate students may decide that consolidating
all their debt and paying off the credit cards as well as the
tuitions fees may be their best option. There are many services
that can help them find the right plan to consolidate their
student credit card debt.
